POSITION TITLE:
Social and Emotional Support Counselor

Gloucester High School FLSA: Exempt/220 days/11 months
SALARY:
GENERAL STATEMENT:
$53,010- $80,740 depending on education and experience.
The Social and Emotional Support Counselor assists students and families in social, emotional, economic, and environmental barriers
that may interfere with the students’ academic success. The position collects, interprets, and synthesizes information about students’
attendance, community, environment, family dynamics, economic differences, mental wellness and significant crises that influence
academic and behavioral success to create intervention and support plans. This individual will serve as a link between the home,
school and the community. Professional development and clinical support provided by Intervention and Supports staff and Mental
Wellness staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must Hold a Masters Degree in a Human Services related field.
  • School Counseling or School Social Work experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in restorative practices, relationship and community building and positive behavior intervention.
  • Knowledge and experience with Trauma Responsive School practices.
  • Knowledge of Culturally Responsive Best Practices.
  • VDOE endorsement as a School Counselor or School Social Worker preferred.
  • Excellent communication and computer skills
  • Aptitude and competence necessary for assigned responsibilities
  • Ability to make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Satisfactory completion of all onboarding requirements prior to first day of employment, including, but not limited to:
     Documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.
     Virginia State Police/FBI criminal history background check
     Virginia Department of Social Services background check
     Tuberculosis test/screening completed within the last 12 months

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 1. Support the school’s VTSS process, including providing targeted support at tiers 2 and 3 for SEL intervention and consultation
    for tier I SEL instruction
  • Serve as a resource to teachers, staff and parents regarding family engagement, trauma support and the academic/social
    needs of students, including recommendation of interventions
  • Participate in school based tiered intervention meetings, monitor interventions, communicate progress, and contribute
    interventions that positively impact mental wellness
  • Facilitate workshops for families and staff to enhance the home school connection
  • Conduct classroom observations for students demonstrating difficulty in adjusting to the classroom and school environment
  • Gather background information on the student’s social history by conducting behavioral observations, making home visits,
    conducting interviews, and reviewing historical student data
  • Conduct specialized individual and group counseling sessions and casework to address specific emotional, social, and
    behavioral needs of students
  • Coach students on how to manage ongoing mental health conditions, and provide therapeutic support to help students make
    positive behavioral changes
  • Counsel and provide crisis intervention for students, including assessment and treatment of emotional and behavioral
    challenges
    • Serve as a liaison between the student, home, school, private counseling facilities and community resources.
  • Assist with special education needs, including the placement of students in appropriate educational settings, as needed.

    pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions required. Must have the use of sensory skills as normally
    defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls.
    START DATE: The anticipated start date for this position is the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year
